During the course of the evening, we will be tasting wines from around the world and taking a guided tour of Lincoln's Cottage, to learn some unique facts about it.

Our member Dave will be hosting this wine tasting event at President Lincoln's Cottage, where local retailers that have been in our neighborhoods since the 1930’s will offer wines from around the world.

You can pair these wines with small bites of charcuterie meats, cheeses, fruits, and balsamics.

Getting to Know President Lincoln's Cottage

The historic Cottage, built in the Gothic revival style, was constructed from 1842 to 1843 as the home of George Washington Riggs, who went on to establish the Riggs National Bank in Washington D.C.

President Abraham Lincoln and family resided seasonally at the cottage June to November 1862 through 1864 to escape the heat and political pressure of downtown Washington, as did President James Buchanan (1857–1861) before him.

The area generally known as Soldiers' Home gets its name from being an establishment as the Armed Forces retirement home founded in 1851. Its prestige was enhanced when it became a presidential retreat in 1857 for President James Buchanan and later for President Abraham Lincoln. The Cottage at Soldiers' Home opened to the public on February 18, 2008.
