DakhaBrakha's music is rooted in Ukrainian culture but creatively and artistically adds fundamental elements of sound and soul from different cultures to create a world of unexpected new music.

Getting to Know DakhaBrakha

DakhaBrakha's music is new, unexpected and in their own words described as 'ethnic chaos', but their music appears to be well put together and there are parts of the music that sound familiar and appeal to a diverse global audience, highlighting the rich composition of different sounds and rhythms.

The music of DakhaBrakha also reflects the influence of the geographical location of Ukraine at the crossroads of Asia and Europe, as it combines traditional Ukrainian folk music with rhythms from the surrounding cultures and continents.

Accompanied by Indian, Arabic, African, Russian and Australian traditional instrumentation and blended with the quartet’s astonishingly powerful vocal range, DakhaBrakha concert is a rich confluence of transnational sounds and rhythms but still rooted in Ukrainian culture.

DakhaBrakha was created in 2004 at the Kiev Center of Contemporary Art by the avant-garde theater director Vladyslav Troitskyi. The name means «give/take» in the old Ukrainian language and is original, outstanding and authentic at the same time, reflecting the music and artistic values of the group.

Their concerts create a new experience for the audience but also a familiar connection with other cultures through the different sounds and rhythms, beautifully blended together.
