Outdoors in the DMV - Historic Mansion, Park and Winery

Our next 'Outdoors in the DMV' event, is for those that would rather enjoy outdoor adventures, instead of shopping in the malls on Black Friday.

Outdoors in the DMV is our periodic event series, which explores the many beautiful parts of the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) related to art, architecture and history, combined with the things that we love—food and drinks.

Walk around the Morven Park Mansion

This is our annual Black Friday event where we explore the beautiful 18th-century mansion gardens, once the home of Virginia Governor Westmoreland Davis, and his wife Marguerite.

This is a very beautiful, yet an easy walk after a nice hearty Thanksgiving dinner day.

For this event, we will only walk around the mansion, and the two miles of new hiking trails, around the estate. For those that would like to optionally visit the mansion and the museum, there is a $10 fee charged by the park.

The historic estate, one mile northwest of Leesburg, VA, was once a plantation home of the Swann Family, of nearby Maryland. It also was a weekend getaway home of Thomas Swann, Jr. who served as the Governor of Maryland beginning in 1865.

Westmoreland Davis, governor of Virginia during World War I purchased Morven Park in 1903. He and his wife were the last private owners of the estate, which is now run as a nonprofit organization that raises money to keep the park open to the public.

Note: We will meet outside the Mansion. You will need outdoor walking shoes for our walk around the hiking trails in Morven Park.

Visit a nearby Winery

We will then head over to North Gate winery, which is nestled against the Eastern base of the Short Hill Mountains in the foothills of the Blue Ridge, for a glass or two of wine.

The main varietals at this winery are Chardonnay, Viognier, Petit Manseng, and Bordeaux Reds.

The winery offers a variety of light local fare such as goat cheese, manchego and cheddar cheeses, prosciutto, salami, dips, tapenades and hummus, warmed fresh baguettes and freshly made soup. You can also bring your own food to this winery.
