The Exorcist Locations After 45 Years

The Exorcist is an epic, an exceptional film with superb acting, writing, directing, and cinematography based on the novel by William Peter Blatty on the last known Catholic-sanctioned exorcism in the United States.

The novel, inspired by the 1949 exorcism of Roland Doe, follows the demonic possession of a 12-year-old girl and her mother's attempts to win her back through an exorcism conducted by two priests.

In the movie, Chris MacNeil, an actress is living on location with her 12-year-old daughter Regan, in Georgetown, where she has just wrapped the final scene of a film about student activism directed by her friend and associate Burke Dennings.

Many of the scenes in the movie are shot around Georgetown, including the well known 'Exorcist stairs' located at the corner of Prospect St NW and 36th St NW, leading down to M Street NW. Since the house, from which Father Karras, falls is set back slightly from the stairs, the film crew constructed an extension with a false front to the house in order to film the scene. Father Karras is one of the priests who exorcises the demon from Regan.

Although the film is set in Washington, DC, many interior scenes were shot in various parts of New York City.

We will start our Art Walk in Dupont Circle and walk to Georgetown, exploring some of the streets, the 'Exorcist stairs' and the nearby house where Chris MacNeil lived with her daughter Regan.

As we walk, around the locations we will also take pictures for our Art Walk contest.

We will stop along the way for a short break, so you can bring some light snacks and drinks for yourself.

After the event, we can break into smaller groups and get coffee, drinks or food depending on individual preferences.

Competition Rules

Take as many pictures as you would like but only upload two of your best photos for the Art Walk contest. Both the photos must be uploaded after completion of the Art Walk.

  • Our judges, some who will be nominated from among our members will then judge the best photos and the overall winner. We will feature the best photos on our website and the winner will receive our award.
  • The criteria for judging will be based on the artistic creativity, uniqueness of the photo composition and picture framing besides having a stimulating effect. The photo, must also capture the theme specified in the contest.
