Our exploration of wineries in the fast growing wine regions of Virginia and Maryland continues and for our next exploration we have selected a scenic winery with a recently expanded tasting room and wines stylistically similar to French wines.

Our Saturday afternoon exploration will entail a visit to a winery along U.S. Route 50, fifty miles from downtown Washington, D.C. followed by a visit to a nearby historic tavern which offers a traditional English Pub menu and atmosphere.

Exploring a Winery in Virginia

We will visit Slater Run Vineyards a vineyard and winery located in Upperville, Virginia that produced its first vintages in 2014. The winery has only recently expanded its tasting room which offers a gorgeous view of the hills and vineyards around it.

Winemaker Katell Griaud studied viticulture at the faculty of oenology in Bordeaux and moved in 2009 to Virginia to work at Kluge Estate and then Trump Winery as a winemaker. In summer 2014, she decided to go back to wine-making for small hands-on family wineries and now works with Slater Run Vineyards.

The wines at Slater Run are stylistically similar to French wines; the reds tend to be blends, the whites very crisp.

We will explore their different wines and enjoy a glass or two in the beautiful surrounding.

Visiting a Nearby Historic Tavern

Our next exploration is optional where we will stop by the nearby Hunter's Head Tavern (circa 1750) which offers a traditional English Pub menu and atmosphere while also serving some mouthwatering homemade desserts.

The Carr House, now the site of the Hunter’s Head tavern, began life about 1750 as a log cabin built by Scotsman Steven McPherson on property he purchased from The Reverend Dr. Charles Green, an early settler and large landowner of the Virginia Piedmont in the early 1700’s.
